Mining Projects.

MRD has done research and consultancy work for major South African mining firms including AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields, Harmony, AngloCoal, Anglo American Platinum, Lonmin Platinum, Sasol Mining and the Chamber of Mines. Below is a list of mining-related projects successfully completed by MRD:

  • Review of the Chamber of Mines’ Mining Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) Leading Practice Adoption System. Subcontracted by the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI), University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (August – November 2011).
  • Developed a Case Study on Underground Workers’ Informal Work Practice of Making a Plan (Planisa) and its Implications for Employee Rights and Duties in Mine Health and Safety for Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) Inspectors/Regulators Training Programme. Subcontracted by the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI), University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (July 2011).
  • Comprehensive Literature Survey and Report on Industries and Countries that have Harnessed the Full Value of Diversity in the Workplace. For the Chamber of Mines of South Africa (April 2011).
  • The Impact of Gold Mining on African Urbanization in Johannesburg. For DfID/ESRC Workshop on the Impact of Mining on Urbanization and Poverty in Africa Organised by UPIMA Research Programme, University of Glasgow at Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (25 – 28 February 2011).
  • Review of Culture Transformation Report for the South African Mining Sector and Identified Issues to be Included in the Design and Implementation of the Culture Transformation Framework (CTF) for the South African Mining Sector. For the Chamber of Mines of South Africa (November 2010).
  • Factors Influencing Worker Absenteeism and Labour Shortages in the Mining Workplace. For Lonmin Platinum’s Worker Absenteeism Project Team – done in partnership with Stratfield Performance Consulting (5 May 2010).
  • Work Culture and Behavioural Safety: Human Resources Steering Committee Session. For Harmony Gold – done in partnership with Stratfield Performance Consulting (8 May 2009).
  • Facilitation of Training Course in Leading Practice Adoption for Improvement of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) in South African Mines. For Decision Partners and Stratfield Performance Consulting (17-18 June 2009).
  • Review of Underground Work (Stope) Team Production Bonus System. For Gold Fields Kloof Mines – done in partnership with Stratfield Performance Consulting (7 September 2009).
  • Work Culture and Behavioural Safety: Strategic Safety Workshop. For Harmony Gold – done in partnership with Stratfield Performance Consulting (2 April 2009).
  • Managerial and Supervisory Leadership in a South African Deep Level Gold Mining Workplace: Perspectives from the Rock-face: For Gold Fields Leadership Imbizo – done in partnership with Stratfield Performance Consulting (July 2009).
  • Understanding the Life of a Deep Level Gold Miner: Insights from the Rock-face and Mine Hostel. For Gold Fields Hostel Accommodation, Food and Beverages Business Units – done in partnership with Stratfield Performance Consulting (28 July 2009).
  • Influence of Social, Human and Cultural Factors on Rock-related Accidents and Fatalities in South African Gold Mines. For the Chamber of Mines’ Gold Producers’ Committee – this Project Complemented the Presidential Mine Safety Audit. Subcontracted by Turgis Consulting (2007).
  • Review of Eleven Fortnight Shift Work System and its Impact on Employee Safety and Productivity in Anglo American Platinum Mines. Subcontracted by Green & Chilli Concepts for Anglo American Platinum (May – October 2003).
